In 1773, British Captain James Cook was the first explorer to reach the Antarctic Circle and, in 1820, Russian explorer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen sighted the coast of Antarctica.
In 1840, the British explorer James Clark Ross managed to discover the Ross Ice Shelf and the Ross Sea, and in 1895, the Norwegian explorer Carsten Borchgrevink established the first scientific base in Antarctica.
